Cleaning Policy

Back in the '50's, Rick thought his Aunt Mamie was some kind of whacko—she was constantly cleaning and spraying Lysol on everything! Turn's out, she was way ahead of her time. (I'm sure you've seen the exposé about hotel rooms and what ultraviolet rays reveal!)

So when we clean for our next guest, we do all the cleaning that you would expect, but we use the "Aunt Mamie Method," which we've updated for the 21st century. We are careful to use cleaning methods that avoid cross-contamination. Here are two examples:

1.

We use specific cleaning cloths or paper towels for specific surfaces. This eliminates the possibility of using the same cloth to clean a spot on the kitchen floor and then wipe off the counters.

2.

We store clean sets of linen in plastic containers. That way, when changing the bed linens, the clean linens never touch used linens.

We have a cleaning check list with over 140 items on it that we complete after each rental. The list is too long to include here, but here are a few of the Aunt Mamie routines that we perform to ensure that everything is fresh and clean for you when you arrive:

  • sanitize all bed pillows, decorator pillows, and upholstered furniture by steam-cleaning.
  • replace all sheets, pillow cases, mattress pads, blankets, quilts, and bedspreads or coverlets with freshly laundered linens that have been washed in the hottest water with bleach or bleach alternative.
  • replace ALL towels and wash cloths—even the ones that look like they may not have been used—with freshly laundered towels and wash cloths that have been washed in the hottest water with bleach or bleach alternative.
  • wash ALL dishes, glassware, silverware, and cookware in the dishwasher—again, even the ones that look like they may not have been used.
  • disinfect all hard surfaces, cabinets, and drawers in the kitchen and bath rooms.
  • wash and disinfect all bathroom tile floors (up close and personal - by hand).

We are also very careful to make our home as allergen-free as possible. We recently removed all downstairs carpeting and replaced it with laminate wood flooring. We regularly replace all HVAC filters, and we use a central vacuum system so that all particulates are carried out of the rooms and are not released back into the air as with standard vacuum cleaners (even those with HEPA filters). Of course, no pet dander is in the house since we do not allow pets, and no pets have ever been in the house from the time it was built.

When you stay with us, you don't have to wonder if the towel you take out of the cabinet might have been slightly used and returned to the cabinet by the previous guest. You don't have to fold the bedspread back so you don't have to touch it. You don't have to worry if the last guest who used that spoon simply rinsed it off and replaced it in the drawer. You can just relax and enjoy yourself.
